Literacy Action of Central Arkansas
People often take the ability to read for granted, but many who grew up with a low economic status may never have had proper instruction or been taught at all. Surveys show that more than 10% of Arkansas residents aged 16 or older have low literacy, making some tasks nearly impossible for them. Since it opened in 1986, Literacy Action of Central Arkansas has provided free, one-on-one instruction for adults across seven counties to help them develop their English reading skills and become more confident in their abilities. Rock City Rescue
Rock City Rescue focuses on helping the smaller, furrier citizens of Northern Little Rock. It not only rescues animals from dangerous homes and environments, including pounds that euthanize animals, but also provides them with nurturing housing where staff feed and care for them until this nonprofit can find them an approved home and caretaker. Rock City Rescue also provides many programs and events to educate the public on the horrors of animal cruelty/abuse and proper techniques for training and caring for an animal companion.
