North Dakota Nonprofits
Helping the homeless, providing support to women, and counseling at-risk youth are important concerns in North Dakota. Here are three nonprofits focused on these issues in the state.
Project BEE
Project BEE aims to support the nearly 500 people in North Dakota who suffer from homelessness each year. It operates multiple anti-poverty programs across the state, supplying food and immediate shelter to those struggling to make ends meet. Through an application, the homeless can receive shelter and other necessary items like hygiene products and diapers. They also can make appointments to receive a hot shower and a new set of clothes to gain a sense of normalcy to their difficult lives. With a little bit of assistance and care, Project BEE hopes to end homelessness in North Dakota and provide comfort to those affected by poverty.
North Dakota Women’s Network
This nonprofit aims to improve the lives of women within the state by offering programs based on its three core values: leadership, opportunity, and equality. While discrimination and sexism can hold women back in their careers and daily lives, activism efforts and advocacy programs run by the North Dakota Women’s Network seek to tackle these issues so women have equal opportunities going forward. This nonprofit also supplies educational resources to the public on unfair legislation as well as business practices deemed predatory or that provide unequal treatment toward women in society and the workplace.
Best Friends Mentoring Program
As one of the largest formal mentoring organizations in North Dakota, this nonprofit matches adult role models with kids who need some guidance and friendship in their lives. The foundation for its work is a belief that children who don’t receive enough positive attention and influence are more likely to lash out and end up in hazardous situations (e.g., drug abuse or delinquent behavior). Changing a child’s life can be as simple as spending some time with them and offering them an open ear. The Best Friends Mentoring Program hopes to make North Dakota a place where every child feels like they’re cared for and heard.
